Animal lovers come in many varieties, but one thing they have in common. They feel a connection to animals that those who do not- cannot or choose not- to understand or appreciate.

When a young person chooses to have pets or rather is allowed to have pets in some cases by their parents, they stimulate some part of their inner person that taps the “feeling” center over the thinking.  I believe it helps develop empathy, responsibility and trust. Even if they don’t own a pet, perhaps they find a connection with horses at riding camps or love to go to the zoo.

A recent visit to a website about equestrian camps included “Horses are sentient beings, with thoughts and feelings of their own. Witness equine communication”. Wow- I always knew that Mimi- understood what I was saying. She understands- “time for bed, let’s go get a treat, I don’t feel so good, Where are you?, time to go out”, and the list goes on.  Since 90% of human communication is nonverbal, is it any wonder they can give and receive messages?

If you don’t have pets or are not around pets as a kid, I wonder how that affects your perspective as an adult. From what I have seen, it may not make a difference. Perhaps, it’s something within us, that we have to discover, no matter what age we are.

Who doesn’t recognize the unconditional love we all need? Who doesn’t see it in the relationship of a pet and their people?

Look at the face of acceptance….in the “love dog”. She just wants to be near and readily responds to your every move! What a friend and companion!!
