Dr. Sears’ believes that our ancestors lived in the sun for millions of years, outdoors for most of their lives. “They were naked, near the equator, in tropical environments, and they didn’t use sunscreen, Dr. Sears states, but around the turn of the century, things changed. It started with the invention of the light bulb, which gave us an artificial way to generate light. The industrial revolution soon followed, and people started migrating to the cities and working indoors.”

I agree with Dr. Sears, that this change may have helped us with the conveniences of life but we essentially are the same people who need seasides and sunshine. We need salt water, fresh air and plenty of sunlight. His research supports supplementing with Vitamin D. Dr. Cannell takes the concern of modern man’s lifestyle further with his theory on the link between lack of Vitamin D and autism. “According to many studies, more children with autism are born during the spring. March is the time of lowest vitamin D levels in northern mid-latitudes. These areas are further from the sun and get less light. This corresponds to brain damage around the sixth month of pregnancy. ” Autism is more prevalent in regions that receive less sunlight.

Any theory of autism’s etiology must take into account its strong genetic basis while explaining its striking epidemiology. The apparent increase in the prevalence of autism over the last 20 years corresponds with increasing medical advice to avoid the sun, advice that has probably lowered vitamin D levels and would theoretically greatly lower activated vitamin D (calcitriol) levels in developing brains. Animal data has repeatedly shown that severe vitamin D deficiency during gestation dysregulates dozens of proteins involved in brain development and leads to rat pups with increased brain size and enlarged ventricles, abnormalities similar to those found in autistic children. Children with the Williams Syndrome, who can have greatly elevated calcitriol levels in early infancy, usually have phenotypes that are the opposite of autism. Children with vitamin D deficient rickets have several autistic markers that apparently disappear with high-dose vitamin D treatment. Estrogen and testosterone have very different effects on calcitriol’s metabolism, differences that may explain the striking male/female sex ratios in autism. ( Dr. J. Cannell)

Vitamin D could be the most important nutrient to your health.

Dr. Ellen Smit published her research in an article in European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, after her study team at Oregon State University examined more than  4,300 adults older than 60 using data from the Third National Health and  Nutrition Examination Survey. The randomized, nationally representative study found that older adults with low vitamin D levels had a 30 percent greater risk of death than people who had higher levels.
“As you age, there is an increased risk of melanoma, but  older adults should try and get more activity in the sunshine… our study  suggests that there is an opportunity for intervention with those who are in the  pre-frail group, but could live longer, more independent lives if they get  proper nutrition and exercise.”

Many advocate checking vitamin D blood saturation (50 to 70 ng/mL using the  25(OH)D test) and supplementing as necessary (5,000 to 7,000 IU per day), however it is readily available through your body’s internal production with sufficient exposure of your skin to sunlight and a nutitious diet. If you wear sunglasses often, your levels could be low. Remove your sunglasses and skip the sunscreen, when you are not at risk for overexposure. Both prevent natural body production of Vitamin D. And, the other benefits of sun and sea- natural pleasures!!

Not too long ago, my brother had a nasty fall and cut his lower arm pretty severely. About a week after the incident, I saw his arm.It was shocking on first sight. He was still nursing it  along with daily cleansings and neosporin. I asked him if he went to the doctor. Nope, he immediately washed the area, and soaked it with a salt water mixture and wrapped it in a towel to stop the bleeding. Those were some deep wounds, but they were healing nicely with no signs of infection. I asked if he was working ,oh yeah, he works in the sun everyday in a garden center. Did it hurt? You better believe it did!! I started laughing. Why did you do it? He just looked back with his deadpan expression and shook his head. Of course we all know why.
